Living with fibromyalgia can feel like an endless battle against your own body. I know this firsthand because I’ve been in that fight. There were days when even the smallest tasks—like brushing my hair—felt like climbing a mountain. The pain, fatigue, and fibro fog would gang up on me, leaving me feeling powerless and defeated. But one day, I discovered something that seemed almost too simple to be true: the power of a single, intentional breath.
It was during a particularly bad flare-up that I began applying this technique. I was curled up on the couch, my body aching and my mind racing with frustration. My heart felt like it was beating out of my chest, and I couldn’t seem to calm myself down. That’s when I remembered something I’d read about calming the nervous system through breathwork in one of my many studies.
I decided to try it. I sat up, closed my eyes, and inhaled deeply for a count of four. I held my breath for another count of four, then slowly exhaled for four. It felt strange at first, but I stuck with it. Inhale… hold… exhale.
To my surprise, something magical happened. My heart rate slowed, my muscles loosened just a bit, and my mind began to clear. It wasn’t a cure for my pain, but it was a moment of relief—a small but significant victory.
From that day forward, I made breathwork a part of my daily routine. Whether I was feeling overwhelmed by pain or just needed a moment to ground myself, I’d take a few intentional breaths. Over time, it became second nature, like a mental reset button I could press whenever I needed it.
What I learned from this experience is that healing doesn’t always have to come from big, dramatic changes. Sometimes, it’s the smallest actions—like a single breath—that can make the biggest difference. And while fibro might try to rob us of our power, techniques like this remind us that we still have control over our bodies in ways that matter.
